When buying a home you should get a survey: there are different types:

a) Basic Survey. These are carried out for Banks or Building Societies when they consider mortgage applications. They merely need to know whether they could recoup their stake, which may be less than 100%, if the property was resold.
b) RICS Homebuyer Survey and Valuation. This details the property’s state of repair and value and is prepared by a Chartered Surveyor.

c) Full Structural Survey. Also known as a building survey, these are more thorough than the other surveys. They look for all problems and detail them in a long report.
